Stress, Are you stressed or not?

Updated from 2019

How do you define stress? How do you handle stress in your life? Do you recognize it?

Do you consider the following signs of stress:

Bitting your nails?

Overeating?

Unable to sleep?

Are you motivated to change.

I am an over eater. Not the eat healthy things, good for you types of food, but things like chips, candy and desserts. Food like noodles and potatoes. Good old comfort food.

OK you recognize yourself, a bit in what I am saying and know some type of plan is needed to change. A terrific, fabulous, entertaining, well I am going a bit overboard on this plan of action here.

Begin by what you consider setting some reasonable goals for example, instead of losing 10 lbs this next month, try for 5 lbs. Your goal is to really focus on keeping the weight o

Get the junk good out of the house. Keep your menu’s simple.

Don’t try the diet of the month or the most expensive diet. Try salads and more vegetables, but do things in moderation.

You can find menu’s listed in almost every book, magazine, on every cooking show. Find and do menu’s that you like and re-do them as you work toward your one small goal.

Stay motivated, keep it simple, be thankful for small improvements. Remove stress slowly, lose weight if that is what you want or just begin to feel better overall. One day at a time

Exercise! Exercise, good old exercise.

Again, EXERCISE the word of the year when you think about it. What with all our isolation this last winter, many of us found solace in watching movies and snacking binges. Especially potato chips. However now is the time where as the old saying goes –its time for the rubber to hit the road. I want to share with those of you who remained slim and trim a big Hurrah! Job well done!

We see all these ads on television about losing weight and they did it so can we. They are right but we have to be incentivized to get moving and motivated. Also we know that if we lose the weight that is just the beginning. We have to keep it off and that is a tough job. A never ending job for some of us.

So with summer right around the corner, and everyone wanting new bathing suits some action has to be taken. This action can not be I will work hard for two weeks and see what happens, it has to be a lifestyle change. It means purging the cupboards and the refrigerator.

I have spent a lot of time in waiting rooms lately and it is truly amazing the number of overweight people. Not just a little bit. We all have some work to do. So what can we honestly begin to do a little at a time to begin to make a difference?

EXERCISE is the key word and I don’t mean running a mile, or going to a gym and using all the machine for an hour. Groaning as you get off the last machine and try to just walk.

BEGIN EXERCISING SLOWLY.

Walk leisurely from your home to the corner of your block or around the block .

Increase your pace slowly. Time yourself. At first you will think , I must have been out here at least 20 min. Of course you have only been walking for ten minutes and you are dragging.

Patience, patience, being consistent and lengthening your time walking slowing in the beginning will start to pay off.

Click on Selections from barb resource library. You will need a password HELEN. There is a simple Exercise Scheduler there for you. It is really basic. Just had a thought instead of checking that you walked on a certain day, just add how long you walked, even if it is only 5 min. Add it.

What we EAT is for another day. We know we need to begin to look at what we are eating. For now just stop snacking and start to walk .

Define the word stress for yourself. I can define it for you and I will but curiosity compels me to say what does it mean to you? Defined in – Webster New American Dictionary as a factor that induces bodily or mental tension. Factor – loosely defined -things actively contribute to what is going on in your life. So you need to evaluate what is going on in your life.

Better health means less stress? Good question and I surely do not have all the answers, but maybe the suggestions listed below will help.

Try to get a better handle on the stress in your life. Sounds simple but we know it isn’t.
It seems that we want everything done immediately and if not immediately, yesterday will do.
Everywhere you look there are opportunities for losing weight, getting fit, eating healthy, how to stop smoking! So much is thrown at us, that it becomes difficult to get a handle on what possibly is our core problem. So what happens we become more stressed.
Here are ideas to think about to begin working on that healthier life style you want.

Ready, set, go
Say a short prayer daily asking for help with your challenges!

Establish priorities early .

Be motivated! Tiring, yes but it helps.

Remind your family, support is needed not nagging.

Small steps forward, be happy.

Say thank you at the end of the day.

Share only what you wish with others.

Seek professional help, if needed.

Believe in yourself.

Thinking positively about weight and exercise!

Remember when you were young and you played hide and seek, or jumped rope? I even remember roller skating and it was such fun. Here we were exercising and did not even realize it. Swimming was another healthy exercise, and swim we did several times a week. I was never a tiny person so swimming did help me maintain my weight.

The seasons are changing, so fast it seems, even with our situation of having to wear masks and social distancing we need to be sure we are active and we (our family included in that we) are thinking proactively and doing something physical to maintain our health.

Magnificent positive, encouraging positive, active positive, thought provoking . OK I know enough about positive. However no matter how down in the dumps you are , take tiny baby steps, one at time to get into the right mood to begin. Start with watching what you put in your mouth and once you have that going , then think exercise. WALK, WALK. Slow walk, free swinging arms and walking, listening to music while walking, memorize your homework while walking. run and walk, slowly at first.

.Start journaling about what you eat. Be realistic and don’t tell fibs. Be honest.

  • Write down everything you eat or drink.
  • Include condiments you are using, how much and how often.
  • Look at portions. Look at big portions and think do I really need this? Look at what you are taking or asking for as second helpings. Don’t do it.
  • If this is depressing you, then remember baby steps, and you don’t have to tell anyone what you are doing, just do it.
  • Look at what time you are eating and if you can do anything about changing the times. Maybe that means helping with the preparation to get the meal on the table earlier.
  • When you reach a goal you have set, celebrate. Don’t go nutz just a small celebration.
  • Do not put off till tomorrow, what you can do today!
  • Smile and when someone says you look like you are losing weight, just say thank you and smile.
  • Helpful tips below:

Eggs a good source of protein.

Remove bun, cheese and ketchup and it would be acceptable..
No salt , no butter and a lesser amount, would be acceptable.

Good luck keep working on losing before the holidays?

Life is like swinging on a swing.

When I was a child the most wonderful thing to do was ride a tire swing, go to a park and swing or go to my grandmother’s and ride the neighbors glider swing, which we did for hours. Up and down, back and forth, up and down back and forth. Doesn’t that equate to what life is about?  Getting hard knocks, picking yourself up, shaking yourself off and starting all over again.

This last week blogging would go into that category of hard knocks definitely like swinging, up and down. That is exactly how I felt working on my blog. Up and down. Several people I know have had hard knocks this last couple of weeks.  Difficult health issues to deal with,  job issues, family issues, stress and anxiety.  Made for an interesting week, but made me see even more life can not always go the way we wish it too.

Learn how to deal with what is going on in your life:

  • Pray – Difficult to do sometimes. Remember God is there for us we just have to ask and talk with him.  In his time, not yours and maybe for a reason we have not even thought about.
  • Work on the most important issues first, think does that pertain to your health, getting a job,or working on the mental health issues? Take a deep breath and get yourself organized.
  • You will find an organizational list in selectionsfrombarb – resource – library. Library is pass-word protected – HELEN
  • Exercise for at least 20 minutes daily. Do 15 minutes if 20 too much.
  • Eat sensibly,

Lose 10 pounds in 6 months!

Physician tells you lose weight! Funny just had talked about dieting in my last blog. Knowing it is not easy to lose weight, a discussion followed on how much to lose, how long it should take and how to keep the weight off.

It was decided , lose 10 pounds in 6 months and keep it off. Excess weight affecting labs and overall health. So we had a heart to heart, eye opening talk about how to accomplish this. No bread, No potatoes, No sweets No fruit. No cereal. In other words something similar to a Keto or a low-carbohydrate diet. Broke my heart (almost) as I am a potato lover and always have been.

So here is what the plan is in order to achiew this and keep the weight off:

Start walking-only short distances at first and early in the day when the heat is not so bad. Really focus on this as it will also benefit how I look and how my clothese fit.

Follow the elimination of as many carbohydrate as possible, which will be difficult., but allow a treat once in a while especially if the scale starts to show a drop in weight. Don’t want to take the weight off fast, rather want to do it slowly and keep it off. No slippery slide here, no up and down.

Think take off 2 pounds a month and keep it off, so at the end of 6 months, a goal has been met and 10 pounds are gone. Maybe a treat yourself day, not necessarily with food, but maybe, and then get right back on the diet and lose another 10 pounds if necessary.

Buy back your health.

Buy back your health, is that what you want to do? Can you do that? Sometimes the long wait of no life style changes has been too long! Unbelievable thoughts!

Are we as a society just lazy or are we so busy trying to keep up with everything that how and what we eat becomes a bad habit. How often do you go out to eat? When you look around in the restaurant, do you wonder where everyone gets the money to eat out . Do you ever wonder what would happen if you walked through the restaurant doing a brief survey, asking two questions only -1- Why are you eating out tonight? 2- How are you paying for this meal? Shocking, the nerve, out-of-this-world. You would probably get thrown out and told not to come back again. Plus the whole restaurant would be staring at you.

Diet plays such a big part in our overall health and it is so difficult to find and stick to the right type of diet. It requires work and thought. Require families working together to make it easier. Planning a weekly menu and following it along with beginning an exercise program are sometimes next to impossible. It is like a mountain in front of you that needs to be climbed.’

Begin by changing your life style. A meal out becomes a treat. Planning weekly menus becomes a game and you and your family are the player, players trying to win the game. Save, save those recipes that you enjoy. Plan a snack for those times in the evening when you need a small treat. Tiny steps in the right direction. Now you can add another piece to your game. Exercise.

Whether any of the essential oils can help you with weight loss is something that again I say requires research. You want to understand the benefits of those essential oils.. Discussing this with your health care provider, especially if you are on medication, a must.

Diabetic, needing encouragement?

Our daughter has just started a board called -Best Life Practice for a Type II Diabetic. She graciously included me. Hope you will take a moment to check it out and see how you could benefit from it.

I am so encouraged to see this very positive reflection on what is a difficult life style for the person who is living with Type II Diabetes. You are constantly challenged to eat right, exercise and strive to keep healthy as you grow older. Wait a minute, isn’t that what we all need to do? Don’t our physician’s, our health plans, our families encourage us to all live healthy life styles. It is even more imperative when you have diabetes.

Look for some diet, recipes, articles on health and fitness, tips for improving and choosing the “Best Life Practices for a type II Diabetic.# If you are considered pre-diabetic or just looking to improve your health, stop by.

Plan! Plan! What plan you ask?

Your plan to try and stay healthy.  It should be a goal for all of us.

Did not say it would be easy.  If it was easy everyone would jump on the special diet or fitness fad right away.  People are looking for the quickest way to do something, whether it is right or wrong.  It is like writing a blog, we all want instant success.  Life doesn’t happen that way and if anyone tells you otherwise they are pulling your leg.

Do have a plan of action! For what you say!  Losing weight.   Start small with little steps in the right direction.  Your physician says lose weight and you think of course. Many people just think that and never do anything about it.  Plan! Weigh yourself!   What is going to be your 1st goal?  Decide and put it into action.  It could be:

Smaller portions at meals.

Drink more water

Help plan meals, so you are aware of your choices.

Be more active on your off work time.  Tired!  Of course you are.

3 weeks add another goal, related to your 1st goal and related to weight loss.  Keep a journal on what you are doing.  Be sure and weigh yourself, before you add that new goal.  Remember#motivation#patience#honesty.
