One big leaf left on our tree!

One big leaf left on our tree. There are a couple of smaller ones also, but this one is a big big one. It almost reminds me of a flower. You can see the leaves have not been raked up yet. On the list of things to do.

This morning we woke up to snow falling. The first snow is pretty and one of those things that make you feel awesome.

The snow has stopped and melted. It is wet and the wind is blowing. I took a picture of the this big leaf blowing next to a bird house and St. Francis. It reminded me of the old old song, I’m a lonely little petunia in an onion patch. I know you never even heard of that song.

It makes me think about feeling whelmed at times and wonder what to do next that makes sense. Everyone of us has what we believe are priorities but reality sets in and sometime these things just have to change.

Good key words here everyone will tell you and I, are focus, prioritize, organize, finish one thing before starting another, recognize limitations, be patient with yourself, be patient with those around you.

News flash, fun and family

Sharing some fun/exciting things with you – expecting our third great grand child. A boy would be nice, but little girls are always welcome. We are lucky to be able to watch one of them as she grows and develops, (Elena). Our other great grand daughter (Maria) lives far away so emails and texts are such a wonderful thing. Her parents are great about sending photos that make us laugh and smile.

I am in awe of how much the young absorb everything around them. I have very few toys left, but I do have some small animals Elena can play with. She has also fallen in love with an old apron of mine and wears it when ever she can. Her interest in different things is amazing, especially those that are a no, no. Once you tell her no, she is pretty good about just looking. One bad habit she has developed is a liking for potato chips. Takes after her great grandmother. We always check with Mom before letting her have any.

Life moves on for all of us. Some days you might wish you were young again. Other days you say no wouldn’t want that again. The main thing we need to remember is to be thankful for what we have and thank God daily.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Be safe!

How is your life treating you?

This last month has been challenging to say the least. You just think you are getting things a bit more organized and then you realize how much more you have to do. Now the decision is what should you do next? Nothing! Tackle a small job!! Work each day on keeping things more organized!!! This is on you. How are you going to move forward?

You can write another list with numbers according to their importance and assign them or you could put assignments on straws and have family members draw a straw and be responsible for getting that chore done. You could try putting projects that need to be done in a box and have family members draw an assignment. Problem is some assignments may be tougher than others.

Halloween went by in a flash and Thanksgiving is running to meet us. Black Friday is being toted every day. It almost makes you feel like you need to put on roller skates to keep up. Everyone is having sales and more sales.

I remember when we all started Christmas preparation, not before Halloween, but after Thanksgiving letting families enjoy Thanksgiving . The weather would be starting to change. Originally coming from Iowa, I remember Thanksgiving with snow. It was so exciting. Maybe the Holidays were hectic, and only the good things remain in my memory bank.

What about a time out day! ! Even half a day Time out from everything related to a schedule, errands, work, school etc. Only relaxing fun things can be done on that day. OK, we probably have to put a time limit on that or the whole family will rebel.

Here are some suggestions for you:

Make your home smell enchanting . Purchase a diffuser and some essential oils that makes you like relax, such as lavender. Then relax.

Find someone to watch your little ones for a morning or afternoon. You will then pay them back so they can take a time out day.

Think, do you want a bubble bath, or would you rather go to a yoga class? Do you want a massage to work the kinks out of your neck and shoulders. Don’t forget the guys here maybe they want a day out also.

Maybe you just want to take a nap without interruption, listen to some nice music or read a good book. Treat yourself to lunch out. Do something spontaneous without worrying about having to pick someone up, take someone to a doctor visit etc.

Think how refreshed you will feel and you can begin again with renewed energy and confidence.

Halloween Bingo

Halloween Bingo fun for everyone. The evening is cold and wet. Everyone is concerned about trick or treating. So how about some fun at home for the young and old playing Bingo together. Halloween Bingo.

Decorations are all planned for the evening anyway. A visit to the Dollar Store or the costume shop was a huge help there. The pumpkins have been carved and setting on the front porch for all to view and enjoy.

Of course you have to have snacks with lots of fun things. Not just candy but cheese, salami, and some vegetables. A nice skeleton or a witch or two to share the good time. Halloween plates for all the goodies.

Here is a Halloween Bingo made specially for you all. Go to the Resource Library from Barb. Enter HELEN as pass word, and click on

https://selectionsfrombarb.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=5550&action=edit

  • The Halloween Bingo has 3 Master Sheets. Blank so all you have to do is lay your markers on them.
  • Download 2 sets of Bingo cards. Use one set for playing and the other cut up glue onto cut up poster board, or some type of card board. Use the cut ones for markers on your master board.
  • There are 12 Bingo cards. The cards are labeled 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b etc. You can use corn or bingo markers to put on the numbers. You don’t want to use regular markers because you want to use your bingo cards again and again.

We can’t forget prizes!! Think about putting them on a table and letting each person pick out their prize when they win, or if you think your family will respond better to them being wrapped, go for it.

Since this is so late for this year, take your time and set it up properly. You will be all ready for next year. Set it up to last for a few years. Put it away where no one can find it but you. HAPPY HALLOWEEN.

Autumn with the trees changing colors fast.

Been a rainy weekend and beginning of a new week, not particularly cold but rainy. The trees are turning colors fast. Vibrant colors orange, red and yellow. Means there will be many leaves for some to rake. Lots of out doors work to be done. Raking, weeding, trimming, planting and for some of us we still have grass to get mowed.

It is so wonderful to watch the little ones walking in the leaves, trying to pick them up and move them around. Such delight on their faces. It must be wonderful to believe that much and enjoy things you do. It is a time to smile with them and hug and love them.

Good time to also get out your to do list. Instead of focusing on the holidays, just plain work on your house and get things taken care of that you have been putting off. How about your garage? Is it ready for the winter? Think about coming right into your garage in the bad weather. Look at things in the garage that are just waiting for you to make up your mind to do the proper thing like throw away or donate. I hope you are not someone who leaves things by the road side. Talk about helping the environment!

They always say if you have not used something in a year then get rid of it. It always depends on what that something is according to my way of thinking. It may be something I will always need. Don’t think like me, just begin and start pitching.

Do clean the garage if nothing else gets done right now. It will help with the coming season and give you a good sense of accomplishment

One day at a time! My motto

Updated from a previous blog on my website.

Enjoy each day and event in your life. Each wedding, birth, each birthday, school plays, dance recitals, ball game, volley ball game, soccer and lacrosse game. I know I missed something important, but what I am getting at, treasure those memories! Do a scrap book, let your child do a scrapbook . Remember the little tickles, stumbles if you will, that make each event so memorable, so much fun.

Thinks of these things, the forgotten line in the play, your child a few steps behind at the dance recital, the strike out at the ball game, the tackle that wasn’t made, the goal that helped the other team win, the pets that died. Life is such an adventure.

What can you do?

Be the biggest supporter there ever was for your child/children.

Teach your child to remember it’s not winning that is important, but how you play the game or dance the dance.

Be a good example as a parent, not one of those who yells at the volunteer coach or umpire. You don’t want everyone to go, Oh No when they see you.

Remembering with those you love later in life is so enlightening. Adult children share with you things you never thought were important. Something you thought so trivial , your child, now an adult, will tell you what a wonderful event it was. Cherish those moments. Life is an adventure and you can’t go backwards.

One day at a time!

Changes to help alleviate stress.

Stress, are you overcome by the stress in your life?  Do you think you can not handle another day like the one you just had?  Dirty dishes, laundry, kids not behaving, car not working right, rain and more rain, bills to pay. You get the picture.

How can you help yourself?   By becoming more organized!  You say to yourself, boy I have heard that before and I tried to do that but it did not work.

My question to you is how long did you really work on it?  Really work on it!  Write down what you want to accomplish and why.  What difference will it make in your life?

It does work, but it takes lots of consistancy, persistence and fortitude.  It takes you saying to yourself, I can do this and i a going to do it.

Try to pick one thing each day that you can accomplish. Even if it is a small thing. For me that would be giving the bathrooms a cleaning.  Then daily making sure that they are maintained.

Make your bed daily, even if your bedroom is not picked up.  It is a start toward becoming organized.  Then focus on getting clothing picked up, laundry done, maybe not all done, but at least a load a day.  Your goal is to wash, dry, fold and put away.

Involve your family in your move to become more organized.  Don’t become discouraged, keep plugging away.  Show them you are not going to stop.   Meeting with resistance, just stay focused on your goal/goals.

Meal planning, grocery shopping and cleaning the kitchen.  Always a job.  Clean that kitchen right away after meals.

Pain, pain!  You are right it is a pain, but once you see you are making progress, you will feel so good and you can really get better at organizing your blogging, printables, sewing projects, and volunteering for some charitable project.  BE READY TO ENJOY FALL!

Crafty! For the Holidays!

Almost six months to Christmas. That sounds so bad, but time is just flying by. It is not on cruise control.

Get crafty even if it is not something you do on a daily basis. Look in children’s magazines, craft books and books that read easy to do!! Why! Why would you want to do that? Because you want to save money on Holiday spending this year! So becoming more creative, crafy, and inspired with ideas may help you.

Your gifts don’t have to be huge just something done by family, or by the children or by you for someone special in your life. If you are a crafty person, use up some of the craft supplies you have left in your special room. You know the one where all your art and sewing, or crafty supplies are hiding.

Some thoughts to get you thinking :

If you are a knitter, what about mittens and scarves.

How about making a lid gripper. Get some shelf liner. Cut approxiately the size of a hot pad 6″ by 6″. Single crochet or double crochet around the edges and you have a lid gripper. They usually last 1-2 years and then the grip may not be quite as good. People love them and you can get as fancy as you want with them. Use multi-colored yarn to make the gripper prettier if you want.

Sewing, just a beginner no problem. Purchase some fabric with a holiday theme. A nice cotton fabric and plan on making a holiday tablecloth. Be sure you get enough fabric to cover your table and hem it. Do a double turn, (each turn about a 1/2inch, so the hem looks nice, and professional. Make a tablecloth for someone in your family who is always generous to you.

Use scraps of colored paper from your children’s craft projects. Make a kaleidoscope picture, add pictures of your children, and put into a unique frame. Such a wonderful gift. Keep your kaleidoscope picture, light and airy, not filled with dark ,dark colors.

Design an angel tree of some kind and let your children pick one of the names off of it and make some small gift for a sick friend, someone who lives alone or someone who has been very nice to your family.

Be crafty and be frugal this year. Next year you will want to have a budget in place to help you plan ahead. For now go to Selection’s from Barb’s Resource Library and enter HELEN. The library is found on the upper right side my website Selections from Barb. There is a budget there you may want to start practicing with.

Good luck and have lots of fun. Get those creative juices flying.
