Hope you are planning and preparing for Christmas, especially if COVID is still hanging around.

Money will be a big factor for many families this year, with many first time ever families looking for relief from being out of a job.

A goal for the upcoming new year -No spending mountains of money you do not have. Especially watch the credit cards as we begin to talk more about budgeting and living frugally.

Tips to start the conversation rolling about Christmas early, and help you plan for as nice a Christmas you can possibly give your family .

  1. Discussion with the entire family first. About gift giving and buying gifts for everyone in the whole extended family. Eliminate everyone you possibly can.

2. Think about thrift store options. I have found very nice coats, blouses, sweaters, work outfits at our local stores. Many stores also have holiday decorations that are really nice.

3. Remember use your creative side.

4. Watch for sales that could influence your spending. We are talking about good sales, for something wished for.

5. Purchase food for the holidays when you can squeeze your food budget.

6. No eating out while you are trying to come up with a good Christmas. Eliminate fast food places from your spending totally during this time. That could be money to buy a gift.

7. Get in touch with your baking side. Bake with family members and share the goodies.

8. Don’t forget those less fortunate than you. Give a little bit to organizations, churches, and food pantries.

9. Take a job, you don’t really like but take it anyway to get some income or extra income coming in.

Comedy relief- Painting the fence.

This is something that will put a smile on everyone’s faces. Decided I wanted to paint our brown wooden fence an off white to match the trim on the house, and make it look nice and pretty. Tried some of the paint behind our shed in the back yard last fall and it looked pretty good

When the fence was originally sprayed, it was a very breezy day, but my husband, son and son-in-law sprayed the fence holding a large sheet or painting drop cloth in front of them. it was a very interesting day, but the fence has looked good for many years now and I was ready for a change.

No spraying, No spraying. We were going to paint using small brushes and rollers to give it a really good extra thick first coat. That is how I wanted to do it and of course, everyone else said spray, spray, spray. Grandchildren helping when they could. Of course that hasn’t worked out too well, between their busy lives, jobs, out of town trip, memorial service and just life in general. Our daughter came from St. Louis to go to a LaCrosse tournament and she helped for a couple of hours yesterday and said, spray, spray. Still doing it my way.

Ok I thought I will just keep working on the fence myself, only a couple of hours a day. It has been very hot , so covered up with long sleeve shirt, blue jeans, socks and sneakers. Also hat on my head and sun block, as I sun burn very easily. Started itching very badly, and had big lumps on my legs and bruises because I scratched so much. Ended up on a steroid and an antibiotic. The doctor said did you use some bug spray? Duh, no!! Bites are getting much better, thank you.

Compromise- next summer when the fence needs touching up it will be sprayed! Job will be done much faster. Thought of Tom Sawyer, I believe having to white wash Aunt Polly’s fence, in the story by Mark Twain.

Hope I made some of you smile. It has made me think about how to work on my blog, more efficiently and look at my niche very seriously, and tackle some things, I have been hesitant to do. Improvements being made, but it takes time to teach some of us older ones. Come and share in enjoying what I have to offer. Be careful and be safe. Learn something new, it is never too late.

Chronic Pain, how do you handle?

Chronic pain is there no answer? I am reading many things about chronic pain and have come away with such a sense of sadness and wanting to help.  It sounds so trite, when I write it, but it is true..  In talking about chronic pain, there are so many kinds you wonder what the answer is. Chronic pain, describe it, define it.

There is the chronic pain associated with the mind, body and soul.  There is the feeling of helplessness the person has, but there is also the feeling of helplessness a friend, co-worker, doctor, clergy and social worker or psychiatrist has when they want to help.  I am sure a sense of frustration on the part of everyone.

Several place I read what a daily struggle it is dealing with chronic illness.  Putting a smile on your face, telling everyone you are fine and inside you are hurting. You wonder if you can finish the day out.  There was a general feeling of I will just hide away from everyone.  My wandering mind said will that help you?

Anything that is chronic, you take one day at a time.  Trying new things to change one thing.  Changing one thing and not relapsing.  Are you following the instructions given to you by your mentor, counselor or physician?  Have you tried keeping a journal to express your feelings, so at your next visit you can share.  Do you even remember what was said and what you were supposed to work on or try to do before your next visit?  Solutions are hard to come by#definechronicpa#describechronicpain#describechronicillness

Continue working with those treatments that give you some relief. They may include walking, yoga, massage, lots of cold or ice packs, heat and even using essential oils to name a few therapy’s that might ease the pain, even for a portion of the day.

Chronic pain of the mind also requires lots of work., planning, and therapy as well. You have to determine what works best for you and set up a plan , taking one day, one week at a time. Any achievement forward can give you a sense of accomplishment. Even when you have to start all over again the next day, it is important to give yourself positive strokes.

Holiday crafts to think about!

Almost five months to Christmas. That sounds so bad, but time is just flying by. It is not on cruise.

Get crafty even if it is not something you do on a daily basis. Look in children’s magazines, craft books and books that read easy to do!! Why! Why would you want to do that? Because you want to save money on Holiday spending this year, so becoming more #talented#creative and #crafty may be the answer for you .

Your gifts don’t have to be huge just something done by the family, or by the children or by you for someone special in your life. If you are a crafty person, use up some of the craft supplies you have left in your special room. You know the one where all your art and sewing, or crafty supplies are hiding.

Some thoughts to get you thinking :

If you are a knitter, what about mittens and scarves.

How about making a lid gripper. Get some shelf liner. Cut in approx. the size of a hot pad 6″ by 6″. Single crochet or double crochet around the edges and you have a lid gripper. They usually last 1-2 years and then the grip may not be quite as good.

Sewing, just a beginner no problem, just purchase some fabric with a holiday theme. Be sure you get enough fabric to cover your table and hem it. Do double turn so the hem looks nice, and professional.

Use scraps of colored paper from your children’s craft projects, make a kaleidoscope picture, add pictures of your children, put into a frame. Such a wonderful gift.

What about a small scrap book? Don’t buy new, use up what you have.

Be crafty and be frugal this year. Next year you will want to have a budget in place to help you pan ahead.
